Dr Brookes trained at The Middlesex Hospital, London qualifying in 1986 after producing the “Manic Depressives” Christmas show (1984) and winning a WHO award for a study of colour blindness as a nutritional indicator in infants in Pondicherry, India (1985) .
Post graduate medical rotations in Oxford, Guys and Royal Free (neuro) hospitals led to MRCP in 1991.This included postgrad training in cardiology, neurology and tropical medicine (Prof Warrel, Oxford). Following a stint in casualty Dr Brookes became Chief Medical Officer for a Raleigh International expedition medicine in Borneo (3 months) and subsequently Morrocco (Film set doctor, Warners) 1991-2.
Returning to The Middlesex Hospital in 1992 Dr Brookes commenced the Radiology training scheme UCLH, London 1992-7. As Clinical Lecturer at The National Medical Laser Centre (1994-6) he pursued research into image-guided Tumour ablation [MR guidance, first lung tumour ablation, first fibroid percutaneous ablation, and proposed and published the first world series of fetal postmortem MR scanning compared to autopsy , Lancet 1996.
Appointed Consultant Radiologist at UCLH 1998-present (cardiovascular speciality) he introduced Laser treatment of varicose veins (EVLT/ELVeS) to UK – March 2001 and developed angiography and plasty as a day case service. Introduced and developed embolisation for tumours, aneurysms and fibroids.
2007/8 Sabbatical as Associate Lecturer to the University of the West Indies with continued visiting vascular practice Bridgetown, Barbados to present.
2009-11 Divisional Clinical Director of Imaging and vascular services UCLH introducing many new practices to department and conceiving and establishing first NHS joint venture Teleradiology company in UK. (RRO Ltd, UCLH)
Currently, Consultant Endovascular Radiologist at UCH and Royal Free Hospitals with independent practice at HCA hospitals and The London Clinic.
